Our Production of Sunflower

Cultivation of Sunflower:

Le Sunflower is a tall flower grown for its oil-rich seeds (about 44%).

The Sunflower should be sown on a clean floor in mid-April and harvested in mid-September to 2.5 tonnes per hectare; A part of our production is processed into oil at the farm and the rest is sold to traders.

Sunflower seed processing in oil:

It is harvested with our combine harvester at the best time in the year : when the seed is ripe and the seed moisture is between 7% and 8% maximum.
The seeds are then stored in silos under controlled conditions, critical step for the process. Indeed, it must be avoided that the seeds deteriorate because they warm up. To obtain this, when the outside temperature is about 10 ° C, the silos equipped with a conical bottom are regularly blown by a fan who sends this cool, dry air to bring down the temperature of the seeds.
Sunflower seeds are drawn off the silos by the batch and feed through a hopper the continuous press. The small size of the press and the slow throughput of the production are key because the seeds are never heated above 50 ° C: hence the name of "cold pressed", the press may continuously operate for long period even at night. It extracts from 5 to 6 liters of oil per hour. One liter of oil extracted requires 3.5 kg of seeds, it is 2.4 kg of cake and 100g molasses. The molasses will be spread as fertilizer in the fields. The cake will be sold to a local animal nutrition trader.
The extracted oil is decanted twice, it eliminates the major impurities. It is then stored for 2 to 3 months in stainless steel tanks of 1000 L with a floating cover to avoid oxidation by air.
